The Inflation Reduction Act provides various tax incentives for energy efficiency improvements. Section 25C, also known as The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, offers the following benefits to homeowners:

  • 30% tax credit on all expenses related to energy efficiency improvements. This maxes out at $1,200 per year.
  • Can apply for the tax credit every year through tax year 2032.

These benefits apply to any improvements made after January 1, 2023.

Insulation expenses are covered under the provisions of the Energy Efficient Building Envelope Components portion of Section 25C. This includes:

You can get up to $150 back for a home energy audit from a qualified home energy auditor. These assessments can identify and estimate the energy savings of various energy efficiency improvements in your home. The home must be your principal residence in order to qualify for this incentive.

How to Claim your tax credit

Purchase products from a qualified manufacturer.

In order to be eligible for Inflation Reduction Act tax credits, you must purchase qualified products. Owens Corning offers a manufacturers certificate for a range of insulation products that meet the Inflation Reduction Act requirements.

Keep track of product identification numbers, receipts, and invoices.

When you go to submit your tax return, you will need to include the product identification number in order to qualify for tax credits. Keep documentation of your purchases, including materials and labor, for up to 5 years after your taxes have been filed in case of an audit.

Fill out the necessary tax form.

When you complete your income taxes, fill out IRS Form 5695 with the required information. The applicable form, for the applicable year will be available through the IRS.
