Which Outdoor Decking Materials Are Waterproof?

    Date Published 2023-12-19

Outdoor projects are designed to last longer with waterproof decking. Rainfall, sitting water, hoses and pools all pose a threat to deck boards that absorb moisture. Which outdoor decking material is impervious to water: wood, composite, or wood-free like WEARDECK™? Read on to find the answer!

    Is Wood Decking Waterproof?

Wood is the most susceptible outdoor decking material to water damage. Wood naturally contains and absorbs water. Fluctuations in moisture levels also cause wood to shrink and swell, leading to warping.

Wood-free decking made from Fiberglas™ reinforced High-Density Polyethylene offers the best protection from water damage. Wood and wood composite decking provide water resistance at best. Fully synthetic outdoor decking materials like WEARDECK™ is 100 percent waterproof.

    Is Treated Wood Decking Waterproof?

Pressure-treated lumber resists water better than untreated lumber, but no wood is completely waterproof. Outdoor decking materials made of wood require annual sealing and staining to help protect from moisture. As an organic material, lumber will inevitably deteriorate over time despite treatment.

    Is Composite Decking Waterproof?

Composite decking includes both wood and plastic ingredients. The wood fibers in composite decking support mildew, mold, insect infestation, and rot. Though composite decking may combat water better than traditional lumber, it is not a waterproof outdoor decking material.

    Is Capped Composite Decking Waterproof?

Many companies offer capped composite decking with a plastic shell for protection. Oftentimes, the casing does not cover all sides of the board. The uncovered areas allow water to enter the decking. The wood fibers absorb moisture and begin to rot if they don’t dry out properly.

Some composite caps encase the whole board, covering every side. Unfortunately, a scratch or break in the shell still leaves the decking vulnerable. Capped composite provides more water resistance than uncapped decking, but it cannot be considered a truly waterproof outdoor decking material.

The Ideal Outdoor Decking Material: WEARDECK™

OC™ Lumber's fully synthetic decking, WEARDECK® is completely waterproof and is one of the only outdoor decking materials that can be submerged.

WEARDECK® is rated for ground contact and underwater installation. You can build a project with our deck boards underwater without compromising performance. Beyond total protection from water damage, our boards add to the structural stability of projects, and experience minimal expansion and contraction. WEARDECK® is designed with UV additives that minimize fading and resist stains.
