WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal installed between the roof deck and metal or tile roofing helps to prevent damage caused by wind-driven rain and ice damming. This exclusive Owens Corning® product is engineered for use under metal or tile, but may also be used under asphalt shingles.

Precautions

Read and understand all instructions and precautions before applying WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal.

  • Check local building codes prior to the application of this product.
  • Follow the recommendations of the roof covering manufacturer and the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturer’s Association.
  • WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal is intended for use on roof slopes of 2:12 and greater only.
  • When installing WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal over the entire roof deck, proper ventilation is required. Consult a design professional and local building codes for ventilation requirements.

Roof Deck

Ensure the decking substrate meets the requirements of the roof covering manufacturer and local building codes.

  • 6 inch minimum roof deck board width, minimum 3/4 inch thick, with minimum 1/8 inch spaces between boards
  • Minimum 3/8 inch plywood.
  • Minimum 7/16 inch OSB (Oriented Strand Board). Deck spacing cannot exceed 1/4 inch between roof boards or between plywood or OSB. Follow local building codes.

Deck Preparation

WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal can be applied on new construction or when reroofing, provided existing roofing has been removed. The deck must be clean, smooth and dry before applying the underlayment. Remove all old roofing down to the deck or, in new construction, apply over the new deck. Sweep the deck surface to remove dirt and debris. Replace any damaged or rotted deck boards.

Deck Edge Preparation

Along eaves, install metal drip edge under the WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal unless otherwise permitted by local building codes. Along rakes, apply the underlayment first, and put drip edge on top.

Tile Roof Application

The maximum roof slope for WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal shall be 6:12 when tiles are loaded directly to the underlayment; loading boards are required on roof pitches greater than 6:12. On slopes 2:12 to 6:12, battens are not required, although tiles should not be stacked higher than 10 tiles per stack.

lnstallation

  1. Unroll WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal and cut into manageable lengths of 10 feet to 20 feet. Allow it to relax for 3 to 5 minutes before installing. Failure to follow this step may result in product wrinkling, which may not be covered under the product Limited Warranty.
  2. Reroll each section.
  3. Start at the eaves, laying the WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal parallel to the eaves edge, with the lower edge of the underlayment flush with the outside of the primed drip edge. The lower edge of the underlayment is the edge that does not have a selvage edge. Regardless of which technique a contractor may choose for installation, always ensure that the release liner on the back of the product is removed during application.
  4. After installation of each piece, remove the release lining from the selvage edge and, if necessary, secure with nails installed in the selvage edge spaced 12 inches on center. See Fig. 1. This fastening is required when WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal is installed on slopes of 3:12 or greater. Consult local building codes for fastener requirements. Succeeding courses should lap 3 inches over the preceding course.
  5. The entire roof surface should be rolled after installation of WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal using a 40 lb. roller or a push broom using heavy pressure. Hand rolling adjacent to and directly above the selvage edge using a minimum 4 inch wide, minimum 10 lb. roller is recommended.
  6. Overlap at least 6 inches where the ends of two rolls meet. Apply a maximum 1/8 inch thick, 6 inch wide bed of roof cement complying with ASTM D4586 across the width of the underlying sheet, then lay the overlying sheet directly into the bed of cement, overlapping the underlying sheet at least 6 inches. Apply firm pressure to the overlying sheet at the lap to ensure good adhesion in the roof cement. See Fig. 2.
  7. End laps should be offset a minimum of 6 feet on adjacent courses.
  8. Along a valley, WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal can be cut lengthwise for easier handling. For maximum protection, the roll width should remain intact and extend 18 inches on either side of the valley. Remove the release backer and press underlayment into place, working from the center of the valley or ridge outward in each direction. Always apply valleys starting at the low point and work upward. lf an overlap is needed, be sure to overlap the previous piece by minimum 4 inches. Underlayment should be applied in valleys before doing eave applications with membranes.

Precautions

  1. Limit foot traffic on WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal as much as possible. Inability to do so may adversely affect this product's performance.
  2. WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal should be installed by a professional roofing contractor.
  3. WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal is a moisture and vapor barrier. The spaces under the covered deck area and the attic space must be ventilated in accordance with local building codes.
  4. WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal is intended for exterior roof application only.
  5. Apply WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal directly to a wood deck that meets the requirements in these instructions. Do not apply WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal over a mechanically fastened underlayment unless required by local codes. In re-roofing situations where there is an existing layer of self-adhering underlayment on the roof, consult Owens Corning Roofing Technical Bulletin “Installation of Self-Adhering Underlayment Over an Existing Layer of Self-Adhered Underlayment”, or call 1-800-GET-PINK® for guidance.
  6. Roof coverings should not be installed over wrinkled or buckled underlayment.
  7. Use extreme caution when installing underlayment. The underlayment surface may be slippery even when dry. Use of fall protection is highly recommended. Consult OSHA for guidelines on fall protection (29 CFR 1926.500).
  8. For best results, apply WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal when the air temperature is over 40°F (4.4°C) and rising, but below 100°F (37.7°C). When temperatures are under 40°F (4.4°C), underlayment will not fully adhere. Store at room temperature prior to installing product in cold weather. lf applied in temperatures above 100°F (37.7°C), or exposed to direct sunlight, the release backing may become difficult to remove. If this situation should occur, move the product into ashaded area until the underlayment is cool. Once cooled, the release backing can be easily removed.
  9. Store WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal in an inside, dry, well-ventilated area. Stand underlayment upright. Do not store at 9°F (32.2°C) or warmer for extended periods of time. Store on a hard, flat, level surface. Do not stack more than 2 pallets high. lf there is any sign of pallet damage or water intrusion to pallets or boxes, do not double stack.
  10. When applying WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal, always follow local building codes and the roof covering manufacturer’s instructions for installation of this product.
  11. When working on the roof, use all necessary safety precautions and guidelines in accordance with proper roofing trade practices.
  12. WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal must NOT be installed over uncured caulking, uncured sealants or flexible vinyl. lf the underlayment is installed over any of these materials, the adhesive will melt and run causing unsightly streaks and drips. lt is the installers responsibility to determine whether all the materials used are compatible with each other. Contact the caulking or sealant manufacturer to ensure the product is compatible with asphalt. Caulking and sealants must be fully cured before covering with the underlayment.
  13. Cover WeatherLock® Specialty Tile & Metal with finish roof covering. Do not allow underlayment to remain uncovered. Exposure to sun and weather for more than 180 days may adversely affect this products performance.
