From Mopars to Roofs: Passion Drives Excellence

Watching Graveyard Carz, you learn a lot about host Mark Worman. He’s a perfectionist; he loves puns and movie quotes and defends his family and friends. But one trait stands above everything else. Mark Worman knows cars, particularly Mopar® muscle cars. Name a Mopar® muscle car, and Mark can tell you its history, engine type, legendary stories and, most importantly, how to restore it. When Mark gets done with one of his cars, it looks as good as the day it came off the lot, if not better.

At Owens Corning®, we don’t claim to know anything about Mopars®. However, what Owens Corning does know is roofs — it’s our passion. So, it’s no surprise that Mark came to us when he wanted a roofing system for his home.

Building Blocks for a Successful Roof Design

During Mark Worman’s show, Graveyard Carz, he frequently highlights three attributes of a Mopar®: System, Performance, and Color. It’s easy to identify the same qualities in an Owens Corning roof. Our Total Protection Roofing System®^ unites each of those elements, delivering aesthetics and durability.

Performance: Functional Excellence

Mopar® cars and their Hemi engines need high-performance parts to ensure each component works properly. Owens Corning Total Protection Roofing System®^ requires the same thing. And while every part needs to perform at its best, asphalt roofing shingles are the front line of defense against the elements.

Mark chose Duration® Series asphalt shingles to protect his home. Duration® Series roofing shingles are equipped with SureNail® technology, exclusive to Owens Corning, to ensure proper installation and adherence. Duration® Series shingles have a patented fabric strip embedded across the nailing zone. This strip helps improve installation since installers can visibly see where to nail for best adherence. It also provides a triple layer of protection and reinforcement where the nail secures the shingle to the roof deck. In a series of tests, Duration® Series shingles outperformed comparable singles in the following:

  • Nail pull-through regarding wind resistance: 2.5 times greater
  • Nail blow-through to prevent overdriven nails: 9 times greater
  • Delamination test for shingle strength over time: 2 times greater

System: Many Parts Working Together in Harmony

Your car’s engine is a multifaceted system that needs all its parts in top form. That’s why Mark takes so much care in testing and fine-tuning Mopar® engines. One misfiring cylinder or partially blocked air intake can cause rough idling and sluggish performance. Eventually, it can impair the engine’s health.

Your home’s roof is more than a layer of asphalt shingles. It’s an entire system, just like a Mopar® engine. When the right roofing components are installed together, they help provide advanced protection from the elements.

Seal

Wind-driven rain and ice dams can push moisture past your shingles. That’s where advanced barrier products come in. Synthetic underlayments rest directly beneath shingles, covering the entire surface of the roof deck. These water-resistant products keep moisture away from your decking. Self-adhered ice and water barriers can be used along with synthetic underlayment to help protect vulnerable areas, such as valleys and eaves. This water-proofing layer helps prevent leaks and damage to your roof deck from standing water, and it can be placed over the entire surface if desired. Together, these products keep moisture from damaging your decking, much like breathable car covers protect the paint job on your 1971 ‘Cuda Hemi.

Defend

Your roof depends upon a strategic layer of asphalt shingles running from the ridge to the eaves to as a first layer of defense. And there’s more than just the “standard” asphalt shingles that cover most of the roof deck. Specially designed starter shingle strips ensure a straight, smooth eave edge with fewer protrusions for wind gusts to grab. Hip and ridge shingles play the same role along the roof ridge and hip, providing extra protection to vulnerable areas. Owens Corning® Duration® Series Shingles are the only shingles that come equipped with patented SureNail® Technology, a unique triple layer of reinforcement in the nailing zone.

Breathe

Like a car engine, your roof needs balanced airflow to function properly. Intake vents provide a continual flow of cool, dry air, while exhaust vents help remove humid, overheated air from the attic spaces. While a balanced roofing ventilation system can’t get you from 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds, like the 1968 Dodge Charger Hemi, it can help to prevent mold accumulation and moisture damage in your attic.

Comfort

While Mark and the Graveyard Ghoulz could help you replace an air conditioning system in a vintage Dodge Challenger, Owens Corning is more concerned about your home environment. Did you know the insulation in your attic and roof spaces can affect the comfort of your living areas? The goal of insulation is to help prevent heat transfer in either direction. Therefore, the type of insulation, in the right amount, in your attic can help keep conditioned air where it belongs — in your living spaces.

Color: Individuality and Beauty

While you want a car engine that runs smooth as silk, you also want the body and style to reflect your personality. That’s why Mark loves the vibrant colors and stylish lines of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s Mopars®.

It’s the same with your house; you want an exterior that showcases your color aesthetic and shows off your style. In other words, you want to own your street! Duration® Series shingles are available in a wide variety of color blends so you can match other exterior elements, such as trim and siding, creating a look that is all your own.

Whether you like warm or cool tones, greens, browns, grays or reds, there’s a TruDefinition® Duration® shingle color for you.
